Frequently Asked Questions

A urologist may recommend surgery when medication, lifestyle changes, or conservative treatments are not enough to manage the condition. Surgery may be used for kidney stones, enlarged prostate, bladder tumors, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, urinary obstruction, urethral narrowing, or bladder control problems.

Aquablation therapy is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called BPH or enlarged prostate. It removes excess prostate tissue using a high-velocity water jet to help improve urine flow and reduce symptoms such as weak stream, frequent urination, and incomplete bladder emptying.

Aquablation and TURP are both procedures used to treat enlarged prostate symptoms. Aquablation uses a water jet to remove excess prostate tissue, while TURP removes obstructing prostate tissue through the urethra. A urologist can recommend the better option based on prostate size, symptoms, health history, and treatment goals.

Cystoscopy is used to examine the bladder and urethra with a specialized scope. It may help diagnose blood in the urine, bladder tumors, urinary blockage, recurring UTIs, urethral narrowing, bladder stones, or causes of urinary pain and irritation.

Laser lithotripsy uses laser energy to break kidney stones into smaller pieces. Once the stone is fragmented, the pieces may pass naturally or be removed during the procedure. This treatment may be recommended when a stone is too large, painful, blocked, or unlikely to pass on its own.

ESWL, or shockwave lithotripsy, uses sound waves from outside the body to break kidney stones into smaller fragments. Laser lithotripsy uses a scope and laser energy to break stones from inside the urinary tract. The best option depends on the stone’s size, location, density, and symptoms.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy, or PCNL, is usually used for large kidney stones or complex stones that cannot be treated effectively with less invasive options. During PCNL, the stone is removed through a small incision in the back, allowing the urologist to access the kidney directly.

Robotic prostatectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove the prostate gland, often for prostate cancer. A nerve-sparing approach attempts to preserve nearby nerves that help control sexual function when it is safe and appropriate, based on the cancer location and patient condition.

Surgical or procedural treatments for bladder control problems may include bladder Botox, Bulkamid urethral bulking injections, or sacral nerve stimulation. These options may be considered when symptoms such as overactive bladder, urgency, or urinary leakage do not improve enough with conservative treatments.

A no-scalpel vasectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used for permanent male birth control. Instead of using a traditional incision, the urologist makes a small opening to access the vas deferens, which can reduce bleeding, discomfort, and recovery time for many patients.
